What Is a Tech Pack? A Complete Guide for Clothing Brands cover image

A tech pack is the blueprint your factory builds from. Here's everything that goes in one — sketches, BOM, spec sheets, colorways, construction, artwork, packaging.

The short answer

A tech pack (technical package) is the blueprint a factory uses to build your garment: flat sketches, measurements, fabric specifications, colors, trims, labels, stitching details, and packaging. If a sample goes wrong, nine times out of ten the tech pack was vague.

What goes in a tech pack

1. Cover and style info

Style name/number, season, category, target gender, size range.

2. Flat technical sketches

Front and back line drawings of the garment, proportionally accurate. Include callouts for key features — pockets, seams, ribbing, closures.

3. Bill of materials (BOM)

Every material in the garment: shell fabric (type, weight in GSM, composition), lining, ribbing, thread, zippers, buttons, drawcords, elastic — with supplier references or "factory to source" notes.

4. Measurement specs (spec sheet)

A graded measurement table: every key measurement (chest, length, shoulder, sleeve, hem) across every size, with tolerances (usually ±0.5–1 cm). This is the single most important page for fit.

5. Colorways

Each colorway with Pantone references or physical swatches, mapped to fabrics and trims.

6. Construction and stitching details

Seam types, stitch density (stitches per inch), hem finishes, bartacks, reinforcement points.

7. Artwork placement and branding

Print/embroidery artwork files with placement, dimensions, colors, and technique (screen print, DTG, puff, chenille, 3D embroidery). Plus woven label, hangtag, and size-label specs and placements.

8. Packaging instructions

Folding method, polybag specs, box quantities, carton markings, shipping labels.

How detailed does it need to be?

Detailed enough that a factory in another country can build it without guessing. Common mistakes:

  • Vague fabric descriptions ("soft cotton" instead of "240gsm 100% cotton jersey")
  • Missing tolerances on measurements
  • No artwork dimensions or placement coordinates
  • Forgetting label and packaging details

Do I need a tech pack to start manufacturing?

A complete tech pack gets you accurate quotes and correct samples faster. But you can start without one: reference garments, sketches, photos, and detailed written notes are enough for an experienced manufacturer to build the tech pack and patterns with you — that's part of TechSylph's sampling process.

Tech pack tools

Illustrator and Clo3D are industry standard; free options include Inkscape and Google Sheets for measurement tables. What matters isn't the tool — it's that every page is unambiguous.

FAQ

What is a tech pack in clothing manufacturing?

A technical document containing everything a factory needs to make your garment: sketches, measurements, materials, colors, construction, artwork, labels, and packaging.

Who makes the tech pack?

Usually the brand or its designer. Many manufacturers (including TechSylph) will develop or refine tech packs with you during sampling.

How much does a tech pack cost?

Freelance designers typically charge per style; some factories include basic tech-pack development in their sampling fee.

Can I manufacture without a tech pack?

Yes — with reference samples, sketches, and detailed notes. But a proper tech pack reduces sampling rounds and costly misunderstandings.
